Description:

A national footwear manufacturer/retailer was introducing a new line of shoes which embodied a novel air circulation design. The marketing plan for the new design required an eye catching visual representation of the function and benefits; a means to quickly attract attention and tell the story. The image needed to impart a sense of lightness and movement in a static display, which was conveyed in the initial concept of a multi panel shadow box.

We provided a detailed critique of the effectiveness of the concept and a subsequent evaluation of manufacturing processes that would be required. We were able to identify a series of improvements that would expand the application, reduce the manufacturing cost, and improve the overall effectiveness in meeting the objectives of the display.

Three 0.25" acrylic panels were prepared with digitally printed images. The approach allowed component elements of the overall illustration to "float" in front of subsequent panels. Aluminum standoffs were incorporated as part of the visual design, effectively registering the image layers, creating an overall sense of depth, and complementing the base color. Base depth was minimally increased and vertical elements were moved rearward, creating space for placement of a representative shoe. This modification provided a direct correlation between product and the air circulation concept. Base material was transitioned from metal to powder coated MDF as a means to reduce weight, material, and processing cost. In addition because each display was to be unit packed for UPS distribution, weight reduction was a key consideration in the overall project evolution.
